The Metro Catholic Conference honored twenty De Smet Spartans with football post-season awards this week. The MCC is widely regarded as one of the strongest football conferences in Missouri with its top two finishers in 2022 (CBC and De Smet) both reaching the Class 6 Final Four.
Christian Cotton was the headliner as he secured Offensive Player of the Year. An award that he shares with CBC's Jeremiyah Love. Cotton's 1700 yards passing + 1000 yards rushing make him a standout not only in the MCC, but across the state.
Other First Team players include Chandler Brown and Aiden Taylor. The two massive offensive lineman cleared the way for a Spartan rushing attack that finished with 2574 yards. Cam Wright (TE) and Demetrion Cannon (WR) also each got the First Team nod. Cannon finished with 642 receiving yards and a gaudy 21.4 yds per reception. Wright collected 25 passes himself for another 348 yds.
The defensive side of the ball featured an unheard of seven First Team players! The defensive line was led by Caleb Redd, who broke the school record in 2022 with 21 QB Sacks! The line was a sack happy bunch. Trevon Piggee-Blake, Mike Phillips, and Quincy Byas combined for an additional 31 sacks. All four of the defensive lineman were First Team All MCC.
Not to be outdone, three members of the defensive backfield found their way onto the First Team ledger. Christian Gray, Elijah Thomas and Chris Sharp. The trio totaled 104 tackles and 7 INT's.
The Spartans have plenty to build on as they head toward the 2023 season with nine All MCC underclassmen returning for next season's squad.
